In 1989, somebody named Tim Berners-Lee invented the "www(World Wide Web)" and he inevented also HTML in 1991.
As a result, there was being a wonderfull changed in the internet world.
A whole host of defferent parties were togather of an organisation called W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) was founded by Tim Berners-Lee in 1994.

After that, HTML was developed from version 1 to version 4, from 1991 to 1998.
In 2000, XHTML was recommanded by W3C but the developers were decided to write code and developed the HTML, because the XHTML syntax was so strict.
Day by day HTML was being updated by another organisation "WHATWG (Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group)". W3C would like to support WHATWG, in 2006, they announced that.
